At an awards ceremony last Friday, Somerset Playing Fields Association announced the results of its annual competition for the best playing fields in Somerset. Wembdon was honoured by the award of second prize in the Large Fields section.

Pictured with Mark Phillips (left), the Parish Council’s representative on the Village Hall and Playing Fields Trust, are Dan Bingham (centre), who maintains the playing fields for the Trust, and Steve Bull, who looks after the remainder of the field for the Parish Council.

Mark was presented with a certificate and a cheque for £50 for the Parish Council by Chris Davies CBE, Deputy Lieutenant of Somerset.

The full results for the Large Fields section were:
1st: Trull Parish Council – King George V Field, Church Road
2nd: Wembdon Parish Council – Homberg Way Playing Field
3rd=: Wiveliscombe – War Memorial Recreation Ground, West Road
3rd=: Lympsham Parish Council – Lympsham Village Green and Cricket Field

The section of Blakes Road from its junction with Church Road to the corner by numbers 3 and 12 will be closed on Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th September while Jurassic Fibre carry out remedial work.

Jurassic Fibre have put out advance warning signs which imply that Church Road will also be closed, from Crossfield Close to Blakes Road. Although the temporary traffic order for the closure permits this, it is our understanding that Church Road will not actually be closed.

This work has been postponed from 13th and 14th September.

We have been told that there will be temporary traffic lights on Sandford Hill on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th September. The work will take place at the junction with the Sandford Farm approach track, and will be to allow Wessex Water to replace a stop tap.

With no prior notice, National Grid have set up temporary traffic lights this morning on Western Way, close to the pedestrian entrance to Chilton Trinity School. According to the information on the one.network website, the work is expected to last until next Monday.

We have been told that there will be temporary traffic lights from Monday 18th to Wednesday 20th September on Wembdon Rise, outside number 26. This will allow Wessex Water to install a water meter. The footway on one side of the road will also be closed.

There will be a temporary 20mph speed limit on Quantok Road (A39) to the west of the Whitegates Roundabout while the two access junctions to the new West Bridgwater housing developments are constructed. The Temporary Traffic Order applies from 10th September 2023 until 31st October 2024 but we have been told that the speed restriction will only be in place when required.

The work is expected to start on Sunday 11th September.

The extent of the speed restriction can be seen on the plan.

At the end of last week three Parish Councillors spent the morning fitting strim guards to 30 young trees on Parish Council land. They then strimmed around the trees and added copious quantities of mulch, which will help retain moisture round in dry weather. The trees included the newly planted trees celebrating the King’s coronation and the late Queen’s life, and the remainder of the Queen’s copse in the Park.

The work was carried out following recommendations in the Parish Council’s annual tree survey report, carried out by Sedgemoor Tree Services. Further recommended work will be undertaken later this year by professional tree surgeons.

The Parish Council own approximately 200 trees, all of which have to be inspected annually as part of our insurance requirements.

Surface dressing will be taking place in Waldrons Lane, Moores Lane, Perry Green Road and Straight Drove between Wednesday 9th and Sunday 13th August. The work on each road will require a one-day closure, but no timetable of the closure days has been published. The roads will remain open when no work is taking place.

Durleigh Road will also be closed for surface dressing from 30m east of Haygrove Road for a distance of 620m westwards, also between Wednesday 9th and Sunday 13th August.
