Cost-of-living support available for Somerset residents this winter

A range of support is available to help Somerset residents struggling due to the cost-of-living crisis this winter.

Somerset Council is again distributing funds from the Household Support Fund in partnership with local charities and community groups to offer a broad selection of essential free support measures for local people.
The Government has given Somerset Council £6.74m to spend between April 2025 and March 2026. They distribute these funds, called the Household Support Fund, with the aim to provide immediate, practical help during a time when many are facing financial hardship.
Whether it’s food vouchers for children, help with fuel bills, or support for older residents and those with disabilities, the fund ensures that people can access essentials with dignity and ease. It’s not just about crisis support – it’s about preventing deeper struggles, reducing stress, and helping people stay well, warm, and connected through the colder season.
They’ve built this year’s programme around what they know works – thanks to feedback from their partners, data from previous rounds, and the voices of their communities.

Here’s a snapshot of what’s coming:

  • Free School Meal vouchers during school holidays
  • Food, fuel, and essential items available through an online portal
  • Emergency grants for crisis situations, hospital discharge support, and council tax relief
  • Specialist advice and outreach from trusted partners like Age UK, Citizens Advice Somerset, and SASP and Thrive
  • Community hubs offering warm spaces, meals, budgeting support, and more

They’ve made sure the programme is inclusive, with outreach being targeted in areas of deprivation and rural isolation as well as town-centre locations, and support being available both online and in-person to suit all preferences and schedules.
Their website provides comprehensive information on the various schemes, eligibility criteria, and how to apply. All Somerset residents, including individuals and families, are encouraged to explore the support available.

Cavanna Homes are holding a public consultation on Monday 29th September at Wembdon Village Hall, Homberg Way. They invite you to discuss their evolving development proposal for the land adjacent to Skimmerton Lane, Wembdon.

The event will be open from 3:30pm to 7:30pm, and all are welcome to visit at any time.

This proposal is, in effect, the third phase of the Cokerhurst Farm development, and the area of land is highlighted on the aerial photograph in the poster, which also shows its relationship to the first two phases. (Click on the poster to enlarge it in a new tab.)

Closure of Church Road, Blakes Road, and Blakes Lane – a reminder

A Road Closed sign

From Monday 22nd to Friday 26th September, contractors for Somerset Council will be working in Church Road, Blakes Road, and Blakes Lane. The Temporary Traffic Restriction Order states that the three roads will be closed between 7am and 7pm daily. A signed diversion route will be in place, but vehicular access has to be maintained for residents. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

The contractors have told us that they will be carrying out patching work, so it is likely that only a short section of road will be closed at a time, and re-opened before they move on to the next section. Depending on where the work is at any particular time, residents may need to use the signed diversion route via Church Road, Blakes Road, Blakes Lane, and Hollow Lane. They said that residents fronting a closed section may have to wait a few minutes before they can access their driveway, while machinery is moved.

They have also told us that they plan to work on Church Road on Monday & Tuesday, Blakes Road on Wednesday, and Blakes Lane on Thursday, although the plans may change due to poor weather conditions.

Note that this closure will also affect residents of Greenacre, Shepherd’s Close, Crossacre, The Pippins, Crossview Rise, and Crossfield Close.

For further information about the works being carried out please contact Kiely Bros on 0121 772 3800, quoting reference: ttro632214N.
